GREAT TAMIL MOVIES WHICH DID NOT SUCCEED COMMERCIALLY

HEY RAM (2000)

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is an idolized figure in India. He is one who is almost raised to the status of GOD by many. Films such as Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi" have glorified this figure repeatedly and rightfully so. However, this is only one side of the story. What Kamal Haasan shows through "Hey! Ram" is that Gandhi is a part of history and history cannot be changed and needs to be told as it was. Gandhi was not the "glory" that he is believed to be for everyone! There were numerous people who opposed him and his policies. Contrary to much of the controversy behind this film, "Hey! Ram" does not trivialize Gandhi, nor does it blame him. In fact, the main character, Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan in a powerhouse performance)learns to appreciate Gandhi by the end of the journey. The point of the film is not that he does learn to appreciate Gandhi despite being chosen as his potential assassin, but rather the way he makes his journey to that point. This journey is so masterfully and artistically directed by Kamal Haasan that one cannot help but sit back and be stunned at what this genius is capable of. What Haasan has created with "Hey! Ram" is not only an epic film but perhaps the biggest casting coup of the decade with actors like Nasseeruddin Shah (who makes a better Gandhi than Ben Kingsley), Om Puri, Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Girish Karnad and many other prominent names of the Indian Film Industry. The cinematography is simply brilliant and Renu Saluja's editing is a work of art. Ilayaraja's music is a highly emotive score that effectively blends western orchestral arrangements with traditional carnatic sounds. "Hey! Ram" is one of the greatest Indian films ever made. It takes a lot of intelligence and passion to make and appreciate a film like "Hey! Ram."

BUT THIS FILM DID NOT SUCEED COMMERCIALLY AND ALSO THIS MOVIE WAS INDIA'S OFFICIAL ENTRY TO OSCARS....

ANBE SIVAM (2003)

Anbe Sivam (Love is God) is a 2003 Tamil language film of drama genre and critically acclaimed film directed by Sundar C. starring Kamal Hassan and R. Madhavan with music composed by Vidyasagar. The picture tells the story of a series of comic clashes between Nalla Sivam (Kamal Haasan), a wise-cracking, handicapped communist and Anbarasu (R. Madhavan), an arrogant young advertisement filmmaker (capitalist), that occur when both happen to get stuck with each other on their problem-filled trip home to Chennai from Bhubaneshwar. Themes such as globalization, financial disparity and compassion in present day India are explored around the two protagonists. The film is also shown to be based on Kamal Haasan's views on theism. It was also screened at the 2003 International Film Festival of India.

BUT THIS FILM WAS  ALSO AN COMMERCIAL FAILURE.

NANDHALALA (2010)

Its  amazing to see this movie excelled in every aspects of filmmaking, be it a Director( Hats Off to Myskin),Acting Performance, Editing ,Cinematography and not to forget Illayaraja's lovely music and BGM. some people say this movie is slowly paced and melodramatic, but they couldn't understand this is not just a movie, its more like a beautiful experience where you could sympathize with those two Characters( Myskin and Ashwath Ram)

THIS MOVIE WAS ALSO A COMMERCIAL FLOP.

I FEEL THESE ARE  THE BEST INDIAN FILMS AND THERE ARE LOT MORE FILMS WHICH WHERE BRILLIANT BUT BIG TIME COMMERCIAL FAILURES."SETHU" AND "CHITIRAM PESUDADHI" BOTH BRILLIANT MOVIES HAD INITIAL LUKEWARM RESPONSE AND THROWN OUT OF THE THEATRES...BUT THROUGH WORD OF MOUTH THEY BOTH BECAME HITS.BUT CURRENTLY THIS CANNOT HAPPEN BECAUSE WE HAVE A MOVIE RELESED EVERY FRIDAY AND THE RUNNING PERIOD OF EVEN BIG MOVIES IS REDUCED TO JUST 30-50 DAYS ..SO THE MOVIES ARE RUN IN THEATRES BASED ON OPENING TREND..SO THE NEED OF THE HOUR IS PROPER MARKETTING OF THE MOVIE.MORE THAN MAKING THE MOVIE ,THE PUBLICITY OF THE MOVIE IS MORE IMPORTANT THESE DAYS.ALSO THE AUDIENCE MUST ALSO WAKE UP.ALL THESE CAN HELP IN PROMOTING GOOD CINEMA.

NADUNISI NAIGAL....A QUICK REVIEW

EVEN BEFORE WATCHING THIS MOVIE I WAS TOLD BY MY FRIENDS THAT THIS MOVIE HAS NOTHING NEW AND IT HAS TOO MANY SCENES WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO STOMACH.YES,I TOO FEEL THAT THIS MOVIE HAS SCENES WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO STOMACH AND A HEAVY SUBJECT..IT IS A DIFFERENTLY MADE PSCHYCOLOGICAL THRILLER AND ALSO WE HAVE TO TAKE THIS INTO ACCOUNT THAT IT HAS BEEN WELL MADE.I FEEL THAT THIS MOVIE IS FAR BETTER THAN THE FORMULA MOVIES AND OTHER STEREO TYPES.
THE THINGS I LIKED ABOUT THE MOVIE ARE THAT-THE CAMERA WORK,CHARACTERISATION,ACTORS,THE FACT THAT IT HAS NO BGM...AND THATIT ALSO GAVE US SOME LIGHT ABOUT CHILD ABUSE....

I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT THE DIRECTOR COULD HAVE SHORTENED THE MOVIE A BIT ...AND ALSO AT TIMES WE GET THE FEEL OF KAMAL STARRER "SIGAPPU ROJAKKAL" AND SOME OTHER MOVIES.
THE MOVIE IS OVERALL A NEW CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE FOR ALL THE FILM BUFFS.GIVE TRY TO THIS MOVIE .....SO THAT WE CAN MAKE FOR BETTER TAMIL CINEMA AND DO AWAY WITH THE COMMERCIAL MINDLESS PORTBOILERS.

VERDICT:ONLY FOR BRAVEHEARTS AND  FILM BUFFS.
